Physiotherapy Training: One of the Most Sought After Careers Today?

Physiotherapy, also referred to as physical therapy, is one of today's most sought after career paths. Its practice involves evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of a whole range of health conditions with the use of physical means. These health care providers undergo strict physiotherapy training to give each patient the best therapy services.

A Physical Therapist's Education: Knowledge and Practice

With a solid background in science and firm hands-on training, physical therapy or physiotherapy is one of today's most sought after career. A physiotherapist's work is very diverse. It usually involves working with individuals who are affected by illness, injury or developmental disability as well as those suffering from various pains and aches of the body.

Physiotherapy techniques and procedures involving the musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, and integumentary systems are all taken up by students in a physiotherapy program. An entry-level PT education course combines not only theory and evidence, but also hands-on physiotherapy training.

The Work of a Physiotherapist: Your First Visit

PT professionals are found working on an extensive array of medical settings - from cardiac rehabilitation to manual therapy to pregnancy pain program to acupuncture to orthotics.

However, first off, your session with a physiotherapist starts with the assessment of your health condition. This assessment then entails reviewing the patient's medical history, after which a physical examination follows. The evaluation of the patient's medical history is generally a subjective exam, while the physical examination takes on a more objective approach to the condition.

Duration of Physiotherapy Training: Not A Minute Wasted

To become a physiotherapist, there is a pre-requisite before you can enlist in an accredited physiotherapy program in most universities. A Grade Point Average or GPA of 3.0 is a must, especially in subjects such as chemistry, biology, statistics, and physics. There are also PT programs which oblige students to get at least one psychology or anatomy course before they get accepted into the course.

It takes about six years of education and training to complete a physiotherapy program. This includes three years of general medical course, and another three years of applied work.

Specialty Areas of Physiotherapy: The Calling

Physiotherapy being a diverse health field, several of its practitioners chooses to specialize in one of its many branches, each having its own specialized physiotherapy training. According to the American Board of Physical Therapy, there are seven major global specifications - Geriatric, Neurological, Cardiopulmonary, Neurological, Orthopedic, Pediatric and Integumentary.

Two of the main goals of cardiopulmonary physiotherapy are helping patients regain functional independence as well as improve their endurance. One physiotherapy program used to assist in clearing out lung secretions, as in those common in cystic fibrosis cases, is manual therapy. Meanwhile, neurological physiotherapy has more focus on individuals who have neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury, stroke, brain injury, Alzheimer's disease and among others.

Orthopedic physiotherapists undergo specific physiotherapy training that makes them experts in managing orthopedic fractures, acute sports injuries, arthritis, sprains, spinal injuries and amputations. Geriatric PT, on the other hand, entails caring for the many conditions that affect the elderly, such as balance disorders, incontinence, arthritis, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's.

In pediatric physiotherapy, the child's problem is first evaluated, and then the therapist comes up with a customized physiotherapy program to suit the child's specific needs.

Physiotherapy in Canada: The Regulating Body

In many, if not most, provinces in Canada, licensing and registration for physiotherapists is a multi-level process. The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators as well as the province's College of physiotherapists are actively involved in this process. The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators grants its ruling and evaluates the student's educational equivalencies, after which the Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE) is then handed out. Meanwhile, the responsibility for making the decision on the competency of the local student, or immigrant applicant, lies in the province's College of Physiotherapy.

The Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) is the country's main voluntary professional physiotherapy organization. The main office is in Toronto but it has branches in 10 Canadian provinces and territories. Membership is around 9,000 practicing physiotherapist from all over the country. The organization's main objective is to give leadership and direction to the physiotherapy profession as well as to further enhance excellence in physiotherapy training, research and practice.

Physiotherapy dates back to the ancient times but the modern practice of this allied medical care started in the 1920s. It is used to address conditions like recurring pain, musculoskeletal disorders, and movement disorders. The health care professional who is trained in this field of endeavour is known as a physiotherapist or a physical therapist.

Nowadays, the services of physiotherapists are widely sought by a large number of people who suffer from a wide variety of afflictions. The most common of which is back ache. It used to be that when an individual has backache, he goes directly to a doctor. At present, he has another option and that is to engage the assistance of a physical therapist.

Backaches come in different forms depending on the specific affected area. The causes are quite varied ranging with those resulting from injuries due to motor accident, some diseases or an unhealthy lifestyle. It may be in the form of lumbar back pain or thoracic back pain.

Thoracic pain, commonly known as upper back pain or middle back pain, is due to a lot of reasons like degenerative disc diseases. It may also come about because a spinal disability. Sometimes, the constant repetitive movement in the upper body or a joint dysfunction may lead to upper back pain. Since the upper back is much more stable compared to the lower back, upper back pains are less common compared with lower back pains.

Lumbar back pains or lower back pain is a much ordinary occurrence with a variety of causes. It may be because of a torn ligament, a herniated disc or slipped disc, muscular spasm or just plain poor posture. Even the act of lifting improperly of a heavy box may result in lower back pains.

Back pains may be temporary and minor, where an individual will just feel a twinge of pain or some tenderness or it can be recurring and debilitating. People who are plagued with chronic back pain are better off starting therapy with a licensed physiotherapist. The relief will be more lasting for it will target the root cause and not just deal with the symptoms. For some, it is a choice between physiotherapy and surgery with the latter having a higher risk factor.

In physiotherapy for back pains, a combination of methods is used in the treatment process depending on the reason for such a condition. In case of problems with spinal discs, only a certified physiotherapist is supposed to work in manipulating back the disc into place. Licensed physiotherapists underwent extensive education and training to be equipped with skills needed to handle injuries such as herniated discs. Surgery for herniated discs is quite costly and risky. There is a long recovery period also where one has to be kept stationary.

Massage may also be used to relax the muscles at the back and to relieve the pain caused by torn ligaments. Myotheraphy and hydrotherapy can be used to ease back pains, not just temporarily but for a lifetime.

Chronic pain, especially in the back and in the head, plagues a large percent of the populace. This painful condition might be traced back to an injury or to a disease. Whatever the cause, the anguish that it brings can make one do almost anything to have relief and comfort.

Individuals suffering from this recurring malady usually consult medical doctors for ways of alleviating the agonizing pain that they feel. They often go through a procedure which includes a series of tests to establish the reason of the painful condition and of course the prescription of medications to be taken by the patient. Most of the medications prescribed can do wonders in blocking the pain. Unfortunately, these medications also have ensuing side effects. The consequences can be in the form of damages in the organs like liver and kidneys, or it can be an addiction to the medication. Anti-pain medications such as Vicodin help alleviate the distressing condition of the patient but it is also prone to abuse. An individual can become dependent on these anti-pain medications which make matters worse. This spurred doctors to endorse a combination of medication and the use of physiotherapy to counteract the problem of how to cope with pain.

This has brought forth a growth of pain management clinics. An option has been given to chronic pain sufferers. Physiotherapy offers alternative ways to manage pain and patients are given a choice to cope with the situation without the after-effects of anti-pain medications.

Physiotherapy methods employed in pain management are quite varied but the education component is always included. Patients are not only introduced to techniques to handle pain but also on how to prevent pain through some changes in one's lifestyle. Most people afflicted with chronic pain, excluding those whose conditions are results of injuries and disease, may blame their situation to inactivity, stress or poor posture. Thus, a modification may be done on their diet by incorporating proper nutrition in the education phase of the treatment program. Exercises which will strengthen the body especially the core muscles are also integrated. This will promote good posture which is necessary in averting chronic pain disorders.

Hydrotherapy, another method used in physiotherapy, is a bit easier on the body yet provides the same positive outcome. Whirlpool treatments and hot and cold treatments are very much related to hydrotherapy. These methods are especially good for those patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Ultrasound and electrical stimulation are also effective in alleviating pain certain conditions. The use of myotheraphy may also be of assistance in pain management.

Effective pain management entails a joint effort of the physiotherapist and the patient. Other medical practitioners play integral roles in the pain management program but the physiotherapist works with the patient for a longer period of time. The relief from pain brought about by physiotherapy might not be as immediate as with the intake of any oral medication but the effect is sustained. It does only deal with the symptom but it addresses the cause of the pain.

Thus, the inclusion of physiotherapy in a pain management program provides for a healthier and safer way to cope with chronic pain.

Physiotherapy to Treat Sports Injuries

Sports injury just like any injury obtained from other accidents can be absolutely tragic as well as traumatic. The physical and mental stress that are brought by the injury do not discriminate professional athletes from the amateur ones. The injury, if left untreated or not properly managed may actually affect and ultimately ruin the athlete's promising career. Athletes who are just starting to make a name for themselves in their sports event may find it rather difficult or even impossible to continue in that very physical and competitive field of endeavor. The possibility to incurring physical injuries is part of the risks taken by the athletes regardless of the sports event in which they compete. Knowing what should be done in case of injury is a must for each individual to remember. The good news is, aside from the modern medical technology, physiotherapy has recently been made available to treat specific sports injuries.

The physiotherapy treatment in the case of sports injuries is normally given after the assigned doctors are certain that the patient is already safe for such procedure. Prior to that, doctors may have taken x-rays to determine the gravity of the damage to the bones. If a fracture occurred, broken bones should be set first by keeping the injured part in a cast or a splint to secure it. This is necessary to avoid complications which might worsen the condition and hinder the healing of the bones. Once the cast or splint is removed, the physiotherapists will then begin with their work. Since the muscles were kept inactive for some time, it takes a lot of effort for both the patient and physiotherapist to bring it to its optimum condition.

The main task for the physiotherapist is to have the patient recover the strength that the injured part has lost. It may take several weeks or sometimes even months, depending on the severity of the injury and at the same time on the determination of the patient to hasten recovery. The patient will then be given an exercise regime targeting the particular area of injury. This is to gradually recondition the muscles and for it to regain the power that it possessed prior to the incident.

There are many kinds of physiotherapy techniques which are effective in treating sports injury. Exercise and manipulations, and the use of massage are just a few of these. Interestingly, swimming is also a very good physiotherapy treatment for people with sports injuries. This will create the necessary tension, but at the same time will not aggravate the situation. The treatment will continue until such time when the patient can already make use of the injured part of his body in its full capacity.

Physiotherapy to treat injuries caused by sports accidents may not be as easy as playing the sport itself. For somebody who has not used the injured part for a long time and who is used to physical activities, this can be very frustrating. Although the treatment would require much patience and tenacity, the therapist should encourage the client to exert more effort and determination, but at the same time remind him of the limits so as to avoid relapse.

Hence, going to a licensed physiotherapist is a good decision for those athletes who have incurred sports injury and who still want to be fully equipped to go back to the sporting world. Physiotherapy will bring the patient back into action.
